FlexPlayer plays several video formats…no conversion needed

There are a lot of video formats out there that it is easy to forget which formats are accepted by which player.  It’s easy enough to play any video format on a PC or a Mac using VLC Media Player, and for a brief moment in the past, there was a VLC app for our iOS devices.  Unfortunately, Apple pulled it off the App Store late last year, leaving many of us, well, sad.

Apparently FlexPlayer has been in the App Store for some time now, and according to users’ feedback, it is a good alternative to the VLC Media Player app.  Available as a universal application (we LOVE universal apps), FlexPlayer is said to support several video formats of:

  • Up to HD quality (1280 x 720 pixels) for QuickTime media files (mp4, mov, m4v)
  • Up to DV quality (720 x 576 pixels) for other media files (avi, divx, xvid, vob, …)

Users have commented that FlexPlayer does NOT lag at all with 720p .flv video formats (!) Unfortunately, it does not play 1080p .flv, possibly due to our present iOS devices’ hardware restrictions.  There have been reports that while FlexPlayer does play .mkv files, there is significant lag on both 720p and 1080p.

Still, if you are in need of a video player app that can play several video formats, check FlexPlayer out.  It’s FREE after all.  If any of you would like to recommend VLC-ish video player apps, post a comment here and help us out in the hunt.

  1. I just installed FlexPlayer on my iPad2. I was thrilled with how fast my videos transferred through iTunes… and loved the menu layout. Unfortunately every video I have played on it has crashed after less than 5 minutes and my iPad restarts itself. I am hoping the update I’m downloading fixes the problem but it didn’t mention anything about it in the description. If it does fix it I’ll post back…. it’s a damn shame cause I really liked this player a lot.

    • We love the FlexPlayer too but we also (belatedly) observed that the video scrubbing bar is not as accurate as it should be, and going back and forth through a video clip was tedious.
We sent our feedback to the developers of FlexPlayer, including your observation about frequent crashing. Here’s hoping they fix these problems on their next update. Appreciate any follow-up post from you on this 🙂

  2. I use an apple cable to watch stuff from my IPad and Iphone on TV, it doesn’t seem to work with Flexplayer. Is there a setting I can change to make this work.

    • We’ll check that glitch too when we hook up the iPad to a TV or an LCD projector. As of now we’re not aware of any settings that may address this issue. We’ll email the developers and report this limitation. Thanks for letting us know!

    • We use the FlexPlayer on the iPad. If that’s the case, we’ll check with our colleagues to see if anyone is using it on their iPhones and are encountering a similar problem. Thanks for your feedback!

  3. I had been trying for over a month to find a good solution to the problems associated with watching flash videos on my ipad – very frustrating!!

Then I found FlexPlayer and have been using it for a few days now, and it has performed flawlessly!

  4. .mkv 720p lagging badly on ipad 3 flex player it’s like 3 frames per second -_-” though subtitles are able to work properly.
    Can’t imagine 1080p .mkv files.

  5. I’ve been using flex player for 2months and it worked great until 3weeks ago all video disappeared from the ipad, when I checked on the iTunes it showed all the videos. Again when I checked the usage it showed me the size of the file. I tried to re install the app but it still doesn’t show my files,, I tried to re store the file its still the same, what shall I do? Should I reset my iPad? But I scared all paid app gone, I’m so desperated, I stopped watching my favourite series because of it 🙁 please help me

    • Apparently Flexplayer has been having a few issues similar to yours. Have you recently upgraded to iOS6? We’ve heard that they are currently working on a fix to solve problems like these.

  6. HI – ISInce I updated my iPhone 4 to ios6 I have not been able sto see any videos in the Flexplayer App on the phone. They appear in the APPS screen on iTunes but will not appear on the phone.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

  7. Unfortunatelly, something’s not working fine on Flexplayer since a cupple of months ago. A lot of updates have been released lately and the problems persist. Since iOS 6 was on the air, the problems became even worst. It’s a shame, but I think it’s time to change the app we are using. The alternative I found is 8Player, it works fine, similar to Flexplayer (but nicer interfase), and the best is that it supports .flv (not sure Flexplayer did). You can save your files to your hard disc using iTunes and then transfer them again to your i device, once you’ve installed 8Player. I hope this helps. Bye bye Flexplayer!!

  8. I have started using Flex Player and have had not issues playing some MP4 files but for some MP4 and AVI files I can transfer to my iPad but when I play them there is no sound.

    Any suggestions?
